Understanding why and how people move is the biggest challenge of modern urbanism. Research recently published on the IEEE Xplore platform demonstrates that Artificial Intelligence can now predict, in real time, whether a citizen is on a bus or car and whether the destination is work or leisure — all through cell phone sensors. The methodology, applied in the CityTracks project, offers a low-cost, high-fidelity tool for cities seeking to optimize traffic and reduce their carbon footprint. Smartphone-Based Real-Time Travel Mode Detection for Intelligent Transportation Systems
